The SMMC Diabetes Program provides the foundation for lifelong management of this disease, and a better lifestyle for the diabetic patient.

Diabetes is a disease of the pancreas that affects more than 17 million Americans. Diabetes is diagnosed when the body does not produce, or does not produce enough, insulin to process the sugar in one’s diet. There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 and Type 2. With the proper education and management, both types of diabetes can be controlled.

Upon diagnosis, Primary Care Physicians may refer patients to the SMMC Diabetes program in full, or to any of the component programs. Currently, SMMC Visiting Nurses Diabetic Classes are held in the Southern Maine Medical Center Classrooms, 2nd floor (1 Medical Center Drive). SMMC VN Pre-diabetes classes are held at both Biddeford and Kennebunk locations.

These programs assist those with Diabetes in learning the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to achieve and maintain good diabetes control. The goal of this program is to prevent acute and long-term complications which result in unnecessary hospitalizations for the person with Diabetes. The cost is often reimbursed by insurance (fee arrangements will be made for those uninsured).
