Low-cost Prescription Options Available Regardless of Income & Insurance
Local Presentations Offer Important Information & Opportunities to Sign-up

YORK COUNTY, ME - Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC) wants to ensure more people know about the low-cost prescription options available to them. Through its relationship with MaineHealth, SMMC offers a free service, called MedAccess, which provides assistance to qualify for reduced or free prescriptions. To help spread the word and make it even easier for people to sign-up for these prescription programs, SMMC is hosting two presentations on Wednesday, May 19th. One session will be held at the Saco Community Center at 75 Franklin Street from 9:00-11:00am. The second will be held at the Kennebunk Town Hall at the corner of Route One and Summer Street from 2:00-4:00pm.

Specially trained MedAccess staff will be available for private consultations to help determine the best low-cost prescription options for each person's individual situation and to sign them up for those programs. Anyone attending one of the presentations who wants to sign-up needs to bring several pieces of information:
  • A list of medications & dosages;

  • Names of the prescribing providers;

  • Copy of their 2009 federal income tax return;

  • Copies of other pertinent financial information (Social Security award letter, unemployment benefits statement);

  • Copies of Medicare, Medicare Part D or other insurance cards (front and back), if applicable.

  • In addition to local generic medication savings at certain pharmacies, free medications are available through pharmaceutical companies' Prescription Assistance Programs (PAP). Even moderate-income Mainers, such as a family of four that makes $60,000 a year, may qualify for no-cost prescription drugs. Since drug companies' income guidelines can be up to 300 percent of Federal Poverty Level more working individuals and families qualify. MedAccess caseworkers, using special software, help patients find the right PAP and assist them with the application process.

    If you plan to attend, or for more information, please call 207-283-7234. MedAccess is funded by grants from the Maine Health Access Foundation and MaineHealth.
