| SMMC Visiting Nurses Award Three Nursing Scholarships |
SMMC Visiting Nurses created The Joanne Wrba Memorial Nursing Scholarship to honor our co-worker and friend, Joanne Wrba, who, much too young at the age of 51 years, died in 2002 after a heroic battle against cancer. We are pleased to have the opportunity to award three nursing scholarships this year due to a grant from the Nellie Mae Education Foundation. The nursing scholarships, amounting to $6,000, were given to an adult learner working in the health care field pursuing a nursing degree, as well as to two local high school seniors who were accepted into an accredited college nursing program.
The Scholarship Committee selected Julie Burgess as the adult learner recipient for a $1,000 award. Julie is a Medical Assistant at SMMC Internal Medicine in Kennebunk and works closely with Doctors Perry, Carlson, Huot and Nurse Practitioner Melissa Libby. Julie is currently taking courses at York County Community College and Southern Maine Community College toward her nursing degree.
Both high school scholarships were presented during the Awards Banquet of the Biddeford Center of Technology on June 1st. Kaylie Lachance, a graduate of Biddeford High School, was selected as the recipient of the annual $1,000 Joanne Wrba Memorial Nursing Scholarship. Kaylie will be attending St. Joseph’s College in Standish, Maine this fall to pursue nursing studies. Leah Malitsky of Kennebunk was selected for the $4,000 multi-year nursing scholarship. Leah is a 2010 graduate of Kennebunk High School and will be attending the University of New England in order to become a Registered Nurse. Congratulations to one and all!
